The Diplomatic Academy traces its history back to the establishment of the Center for Training and Professional Development of Diplomatic Staff at the International University of Kyrgyzstan in 1998. For a very small number of students from the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry, the Center held two-week courses in diplomacy, political science, international relations, international law, and other disciplines, which did not quite meet the expectations and requirements of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry for quality training of highly qualified young diplomats.

On June 12, 2001, the Diplomatic Academy was established by the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic. The founders were the Kyrgyz government, represented by the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was the first step in forming a higher educational institution of new status. In the same year the Resolution of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic "On Approval of the Regulations on the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic and its structure" was adopted, and in 2002 the Resolution of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic "On the Structure of the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic" was adopted.

In 2001, the Academy opened its doors to its first students. Since its foundation, the Diplomatic Academy has rightfully taken its place as one of the most modern educational institutions in the country, and its new status was certainly the beginning of major changes in the work of the Academy and in the activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic. In September 2013, the Charter of the Academy was approved by the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Initially, there was only one programme, International Relations, but given the needs of the MFA KR and the labour market in the relevant field, programmes such as Law and Economics were opened.

The Academy has done a lot of work in this area in a fairly short period of time. Thus, in 2017, together with MGIMO, programmes in "Management" and "Business Administration" were launched, and in 2018, admission to "Journalism" and "Linguistics" was carried out.
